Early Life

Kalpana Saroj was born in 1961 in a small village called Roperkheda in Akola district, Maharashtra. At the age of 12 she was forcibly married and moved to Mumbai, where she lived in a slum and faced abuse. After leaving the marriage, she returned to her village, but due to social ostracism and trauma, she attempted suicide. At 16 she relocated back to Mumbai and began working in a garment factory to support herself and her family.

First Ventures

Using a government loan scheme for people from disadvantaged communities, Kalpana started a tailoring business. Over time, she expanded into furniture retail and then real estate. Her early experience of hardship and struggle gave her resilience, a strong work ethic, and the drive to succeed even against all social barriers.

Business Turnaround

In 2001, a major copper-tube manufacturing company — Kamani Tubes — went into liquidation and was on the verge of collapse.

Kalpana stepped in to revive the company. Despite having no prior experience in the manufacturing sector, she reorganized operations, negotiated with creditors and labour unions, relocated the factory, and managed to turn the company profitable again. Under her leadership, Kamani Tubes became a successful enterprise, safeguarding jobs and restoring business value a remarkable turnaround from near-bankruptcy.

Wider Ventures & Impact

Beyond industrial manufacturing, Kalpana has ventured into real estate, mild business diversification, and social entrepreneurship. She has invested in uplifting marginalised communities and helped many find opportunities and support. Her journey has inspired millions, making her a symbol of resilience, empowerment, and hope — especially for women and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Awards & Recognition

Kalpana Saroj was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2013 — one of India’s highest civilian awards — for her contributions to trade, industry and her remarkable journey from adversity to success.

Apart from business success, she has also gained public admiration as a motivational speaker and social change icon.
